  Campground just north of Saco Lake and The Flume! Don's recommendation.

  Rte 93N to the Twin Mountain exit (Exit 35) onto Route 3. Campground is a few miles down on the right---big yellow sign, just after The Pizza Pub. Roughly 3 hrs from Boston.

• Borderland State Park - Easton, MA
  Wide expanse of state land for picnics, walking, and X-C skiing!
  Directions: 95 south (from 93S or 128S, this is south of Boston) to Exit 10 (Coney St / Sharon / Walpole). Take a left at end of ramp onto Rte 27, go through lights in center of Sharon and bear right at the BankBoston island. At rotary stay straight, keeping Lake Massapoag on the right. Eventually the Borderland entrance will be on your left, tucked into the woods, shortly after Cheshire St. Tons of parking.
• Boston Rock Gym - Woburn, MA - 617.935.PEAK
  Climb rock faces indoors. Training and group rates available.
  Directions: Take exit 36 (Washington Street Exit) off Rte. 128. Make a right off the ramp, follow signs to Cummings Park and Washington Street. Follow the road until it dead ends into Washington Street, then make a right. At the second stop light (just after you've crossed the highway), make a right onto Olympia Avenue. Go 6/10th's of a mile and make a left into lot 78. The Rock Gym is located around the corner from Essex Electric.
• Boxford State Forest - Boxford, MA (& surrounding towns)
  Large state forest with trails which lead to Bald Hill. Excellent for X-C skiing and hiking. Some "evidence of civilization" near trail head, but pretty good for being so close to Boston. Lots of birds.  Free.  Dogs, bikes, horses, and skiing allowed.  Trail map available at the MA DEM site.
  Rte 114 to the North Andover - Middleton town line. At the town line (about 1/4mi into North Andover), turn on to Sharpner's Pond Road. Go straight until Sharpner's Pond Rd wants to take a sharp left, and there's a small parking lot at that point (do not follow the road left, follow straight into the parking lot). This is the entrance to the State Forest.
• Breakheart Reservation (Lynn Fells Entrance) - Saugus/Melrose MA
  Breakheart Reservation is located on the Lynn Fells Parkway off of Rt. 1 going south. Off of Rt. 1 take the exit at Russo's Candies, Dunkin Donuts, and Kelly's Roast Beef. Going North on Rt. 1 take the exit right after Barnes & Nobles Book Store, go over the highway--take left at stop sign--Star market be on the right. Shortly after the Star Market take right, park at the Arena on the right or along the side of the road. There is a ranger station in front--meet there by the picnic table.

• Crane's Beach - Ipswich, MA
  Route 128N towards Gloucester. Take exit 20 for Route 1A North. Follow 1A North for 8.3 miles through the towns of Wenham and Hamilton, past the intersection of Route 133. Just before the right turn around the green in Ipswich center, turn right onto Argilla Rd. and follow the signs to Crane's Beach. Note: Crane's Beach is a very popular spot, but it is notorious for its flying insects during the warmer weather.

• Delaney House - Rte 5, Holyoke, MA
  Usually the meeting spot for hikes (i.e. Mt. Tom) in the Amherst area.
  Take 91 North to exit 18 and take right at end of exit, go past hotel and get on Rte 5 heading towards Holyoke, MA.  The Delaney House is on the right.

• Gould's Sugar House - Rte 2, Shelburne Falls, MA - 413.625.6170
  Opens in late February, early March. Hours: 8-6, every day.
  Watch the weather: Warm days, cold nights starts the sap flowing! There's a window of about 4 weeks per year when they are making the syrup!
  • See maple syrup as it's boiled down! Ask questions! Warm yourself at the fire!
  • Excellent pancakes (and other food) available.
  • Gift shop--maple candy, maple syrup, candles, ...
  • Can head out back to see where the trees are tapped. Say HI to the cows in the woods (if they're still there).

• Hale Reservation - Westwood, MA
  Take route 128 to Westwood, route 109 exit, follow 109 .9 miles and take a right on Dover Rd. Then take 2nd right onto Carby St. Hale Reservation's entrance is right after the Westwood Highway Dept. Follow this road until you come to your first parking lot on the left (that is the Cat Rock parking lot).
• Horn Pond - Woburn, MA
  From I-95 (Route 128), take Exit 34 to Winn Street. Follow signs (south) 2 miles to Woburn. Go right at center triangle onto Pleasant St (do not go around the rotary). At next traffic light (0.1 miles) bear left onto Arlington Rd. After a few blocks, you will see pond on your right. Take a right at the end of Arlington Road; proceed to parking lot on your right.

• Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary - Topsfield, MA - 508-887-9264
  Deer, birds, trails, flora, lookout tower. A definite "family" place.
  May to October: Tuesday through Sunday, and Monday holidays 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  November to April: Tuesday through Sunday, and Monday holidays 10 a.m. to 4p.m.
  Trails open Tuesday through Sunday dawn to dusk.
  Free for MAS members; $3 for non-member adults; $2 for children 3-15 and seniors

  From Boston and the south: Take Rt. 95 north to exit 50 and follow Rt. 1 north. At the junction of Rt. 1 and Rt. 97, turn right onto Rt. 97 south (towards Beverly and Danvers). Follow Rt. 97 south and take the second left onto Perkins Row. Follow Perkins Row for one mile and the sanctuary is on the right.
  From the north: Take Rt. 95 south to exit 54 and follow Rt. 97 south. At the junction of Rt. 1 and Rt. 97 in Topsfield, stay on Rt. 97 south and take the second left onto Perkins Row. Follow Perkins Row for one mile and the sanctuary is on the right.

• Lowell Brewing Company - 199 Cabot St, Lowell, MA - 508.931.1200
  Directions: From Route 495 or Route 3, take the Lowell Connector to the Thorndike Street exit. Thorndike goes uphill, and you will pass through a traffic light. Next, you cross under a small overpass, then you will come to a second traffic light (this is all in about 1/2 mile or so). At the second light, bear right - the road becomes Dutton Street. The next light is in a couple hundred yards at Market Street - go straight. The next light is another 100 yards or so at Merricmack Street. Go straight (it kind of jogs left) through the light onto Arcano Drive. You will see the Police station on your left on Arcano Drive. In about 100 yards, you will come to another traffic light - take a left onto French Street. Drive down French Street about 1/4 mile or so, and take a right onto Cabot Street (I think there is a traffic light there). The Brewing Co. will be on the right, the parking lot is just past it.
• Lynn Woods
  Western Entrance: Rte 128 to exit 43. If heading south, take a left at the bottom of the ramp, if heading north, take a right onto Walnut Street, follow until you cross Rte 1. If you're heading up Rte 1, take the Walnut Street exit and head toward Lynn. Look for the pond on the left, and shortly after there's a blinking light where you take a left onto Penny Brook Road. At the top of the hill is the west entrance to Lynn Woods.

• Lake Massabesic - Manchester, NH
  Manchester NH's water supply. Good for a 2-hr walk/X-C/snowshoe!
  Take 93 North to Exit 7 (101 EAST). (Or, take Route 3/Everett Turnpike North toward Nashua/Manchester, then after the Bedford toll booth on Everett Turnpike, take 101 EAST to where it merges with 93 North, then back onto 101 EAST.) Take the first exit off 101 EAST. Bear right off the exit, go straight through the rotary. The parking lot for Lake Massabesic is right after you get through the rotary.
• Maudslay State Park - Newburyport, MA
  1) From the Boston area, take I-95 north to exit 57. Because you will want to make a left-hand turn at the end of the exit, you will want to stay to the left as you drive along the off ramp. You will be greeted at the end of the ramp by a traffic light.
  2) Turn left at the traffic light mentioned above and drive 0.7 miles west on route 113 until you reach the road called Hoyts Lane. The road will be on your right hand side. The road just before Hoyts Lane is called Artichoke Terrace.
  3) The Hoyts Lane name plate sits atop a tall sign post. This plate is slightly bent back away from you. So it may not be immediately clear to you that you are seeing the street name that you are after. However, there are a couple of handy reference marks to help you see this road sign. First, there is a stop sign attached to the road's sign post. Second, there is a sign on the right hand side of route 113, and just **after** the Hoyts Lane road, that indicates that the speed limit on the road is 50 m.p.h. Also, note that Hoyts Lane is sometimes referred to as Hoyts-Gypsy Lane. So you may notice the word "Gypsy" on the Hoyts Lane name plate.
  4) If you miss all of these indicators and encounter a "Entering West Newbury" sign along route 113, then you have gone past the Hoyts Lane turn off.
  5) Once you do turn right from route 113 West onto Hoyts Lane, travel all the way down to the end of the road.
  6) At the end of Hoyts Lane, turn right. This road is called Curzon Mill Road. Drive into the large dirt parking lot that you will see immediately off to your right.

• Norsk X-C Ski Area - New London, NH
  Norsk Web Site
  Norsk offers cross-country skiing on a golf course in New London, NH. Groomed trails, some backcountry, some ski skating. Ski rentals, lessons.
  Directions: 93N to 89N to Exit 11 (Rte 11E) in New London. About 1.5 mi from bottom of ramp is blue sign pointing to Norsk.
• Northfield X-C Ski Area

  Northfield offers ski rentals and half-day rates. Located in southern NH.

• Pemi River Campground - 603-726-7015
  93 North to exit 29. Turn left off the ramp and you will see the sign for the campground entrance 100 feet on right. Roughly 2.5 hrs from Boston.
  Just south of the Kancamagus, this campground offers access to many hikes. They also do tubing and kayaking on the Pemigewasett River.

• Ridge Valley Stables - Rte 140, Grafton, MA - 508.839.3038
  Directions: Take Mass Pike to Exit 11 (Route 122). Take a right off the exit and follow 122 about 1 or 2 miles until you reach Route 140. Take a right onto 140 (heading south) and follow all the way through Grafton past Silver Lake on the left (about 5 miles). You can't miss RidgeValley Stables on the right hand side of Route 140. It's very wide open. If you pass the flea market or the Upton town line, you've gone a skip, hop, and a jump too far.

  From I 84
  Take I-84 East or West to Exit 3. (Route 7 South - Danbury Airport).
  Take 2nd right for Danbury Airport.
  At light at end of ramp, turn left.
  At next light, take left onto Wooster Heights.
  Go 9/10ths mile and turn right onto Southern Blvd.
  Go 6/10ths mile and Southern Blvd. will make a sharp right turn.
  The Park & Mansion entrance is 100 yards beyond this turn on the right.
  Parking in parking lot on the right ­ follow trail past red gate to the Red Barn
  
  From Route 7 North from Norwalk
  Take exit for Danbury Airport.
  At light at end of ramp, turn right onto Wooster Heights.
  Go 8/10ths mile and turn right onto Southern Blvd.
  Go 6/10ths mile and Southern Blvd. will make a sharp right turn.
  The Park & Mansion entrance is 100 yards beyond this turn on the right.
  Parking in parking lot on the right ­ follow trail past red gate to the Red Barn
  
  From City Center Danbury
  Take Main Street south towards Rogers Park and War Memorial.
  At intersection of Main and South Streets, the War Memorial will be straight ahead.
  Take a right turn at the light onto South Street.
  Take first left turn onto Mountainville Avenue.
  Go 3/10ths mile and bear right onto Southern Blvd.
  Go 4/10ths mile and the Park & Mansion entrance is on the left.
  Parking in parking lot on the right ­ follow trail past red gate to the Red Barn

• Windblown X-C Ski Center - New Ipswich, NH
  From Boston: take rt. 2 west to exit 32 in Leominster. Follow rt. 13 north to rt. 119 in Townsend. Go west on rt. 119 for exactly 2 miles, turn right at the sign for New Ipswich. Windblown in 11 miles up on the left.

• Andover, MA - Dascomb Rd. Commuter Parking Lot (off Rte 93)
  Take 93 to the Dascomb Road exit (Andover/Tewksbury). If taking 93 South, take a left at the end of the exit. The parking lot is on your left. If heading north on 93, take a left at the end of the exit, then your first right after going back under 93 (at the lights). The parking lot is on your right, alongside 93 south. Dascomb Rd is 2 exits south of Rte 495 and 6 exits north of 128 on Rte 93 (the exit after the lane drop in Wilmington, MA).
• Boxborough, MA - Holiday Inn, Rte 111
  Take 495. One exit south of Rte 2 is the Rte 111 exit (Boxborough), head East. Look for the sign for the Holiday Inn, which is just a stone's throw from 495.
• Malden, MA - Malden T Station (Orange Line), Rte 60
  Take 93 to the Rte 60 exit. Head East toward Malden. About 4 miles from 93 you will see an overpass, and Malden Station will be on your left. Take a left BEFORE the train overpass & station and live park. If you are taking the T to Malden Station, leave the station on the inbound to Boston side of the tracks to meet your ride.
• Tyngsboro, MA - Park & Ride, Rte. 113
  Route 3 to the Kendall Rd. / Rte. 113 exit near the NH border.  Head east.  The parking lot is on Rte. 113 about 1/2 mile from the northbound side of Rte. 3.
• Concord, NH - Pizzeria Uno / Einstein's Bagels / LL Bean's, Rte 93, Exit 14
  Exit 14 off Rte 93 in Concord, NH.
  Pizzeria Uno (default parking/meeting spot):  From the exit, go through the lights, take a left at the next light, and go through the LL Bean's parking lot to the Pizzeria Uno.  If you don't see anyone milling around, look in Einstein's Bagels across the street.
  Einstein's Bagels:  From the exit stay right, go straight through the lights, and Einstein's Bagels comes up quickly on the right.
  We usually leave the cars in front of LL Bean's somewhere.
• Milford, NH - Ocean National Bank (formerly Granite Bank)
  A big brick bank building at the junction of 101 & 101A, west side of Milford, NH, nearing Wilton.
  From Nashua take 101A west (exit 7 or 8 off Rte 3 (either exit goes there)) and a ways west of Nashua watch for a set of lights near some train tracks, shortly after that 101A goes straight and 101 takes a left at the next set of lights--go left onto 101 west.  A few miles down 101 will be a set of lights (supermarket, auto parts store, police station), take a left there and your first right, follow to the Ocean National Bank parking lot.
  From Peterborough follow 101E until Milford where 101A wants to go straight, stay on 101 east by taking a right at the Bank.  Take a right at the next set of lights, follow to the Bank.
• Nashua, NH - Denny's/LLBean's, Rte 3, Exit 6
  Take Rte 3 into southern NH, take exit 6 west and stay left, but do not go Rte 3 south.  Take a left at the lights into the Nashua Mall (which is next to Rte 3 south).  Meet in the parking lot between the Denny's and LL Bean's..
